The Last Supper, Mary's Assumption and Peter's Denial

After walking the via dolorosa and breakfast, we had the rest of the morning to visit several other sites.

This is the Chapel of the Last Supper. Tradition indicates that this is one of two possible sites where Jesus and the disciples has the last supper. It is also called the Mother of All Churches because it here that the Church was born. It is in this same space that Pentecost occurred. This Church is managed by the Franciscans.

I don't have a good photograph of the other space that may have been the upper room. Photograph #1 is a partial picture of the room. This upper room was a Byzantine Church before it was destroyed. The crusaders rebuilt the church. The crusader church was not destroyed by the Muslims when they took over Jerusalem, but it was converted to a mosque. In the picture, you see the mihrab and an arabic calligraphy. When the space was given back to the Christians, the Christians did not destroy the mihrab and decoration as a sign of respect for not destroying the church. Photograph #2 is a close up of stain glass arabic calligraphy.

The Church and Abby of St. Mary Dormition. This is the place where Mary is said to have fallen into a deep sleep and assumed into heaven.

This is the dome in the upper church.

In the lower church, you see this unique image. Here the resurrected Christ holds an infant Mary in heaven. According to our tour guide, Mary is not pictured as an infant or child in any other work.

This tomb of Mary represents the location that tradition says Mary was assumed into Heaven.

Gallicantu means when the roster crowed. This church is the site of three related sites. It is the place where Jesus was held before seeing Pilot. It is the house of Caiaphas, the high priest who judged Jesus. It is also the place where St. Peter denied Jesus, heard the roster crow and ran away to weep.

The three photographs above are of the historic prison cells and torture rooms used by Caiaphas located below the church. Photograph #3 is the sacred pit. This is the cell that tradition says that Jesus was held in overnight as he waited to be taken to Pilot. As the name indicates, the prison cell was actually a pit. The opening in the picture is where they would lower prisoners into the cell by rope.

The Steps of Jesus are photographed above. According to tradition, these steps were most likely used by Jesus before he was crucified. These were the only steps in Jerusalem that connected the garden of Gethsemane to Caiaphas' house.

Location:Mt. Zion

  1. I wonder if, in the picture of Mary's Assumption, the infant Mary could represent her soul. Although the Assumption was of her body and soul, it was a doctrine that developed over time.
